If you are seeing strange characters in your e-mail, it may be because a variety of reasons, such as copying and pasting from Word or other program. It may crop up after saving, due to the Character Set being malformed.

To resolve, edit the e-mail and simply delete the characters, then save the e-mail.
Try sending yourself a test to make sure it has been corrected.
Still Having An Issue?
If you still get weird characters, then try editing the Source Code of the e-mail.
Sometimes a non-breaking space code will cause these characters to occur. Try deleting them from the source code.
Delete the all the from the email.
BEFORE:
<p><span style="font-size:14px;">Hello </span>[[contact.firstname]] <br /><br />
<span style="font-size:14px;">Hope all is well.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:14px;">Hope all is well! How have you and your family been? </span></p>
